European Commission spokesman Christian Wigand referred to the situation of migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border, and thus on the border of the European Union. – We cannot accept any attempts to incite or allow illegal migration to the European Union by third countries. This requires border control and respect for the fundamental rights of migrants, he said.
Poland and all the Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia accuse Belarus of organizing the transfer of immigrants to its territory under the so-called hybrid war. The immigrants come from, among others, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and other countries. In a joint statement, the prime ministers of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia stated that the current crisis on the borders with Belarus was planned and systematically organized by the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. They also called on the Belarusian authorities to stop actions leading to escalating tensions.

European Commission spokesman Christian Wigand commented on this situation on Tuesday.
“We condemn attempts to instrumentalise people for political purposes,” he stressed. “We cannot accept any attempts to incite or allow illegal migration to the European Union by third countries,” he said.
As he continued, “both orderly, robust border management and full respect for the fundamental rights of migrants are needed.” – This is the only effective and humane way of managing migration – he stressed.
He added that the European Commission “works closely” with the Polish and Lithuanian authorities to support them in the effective management of the external border, in line with European Union law, “with full respect for fundamental human rights and effective access to the asylum procedure”.
