It was possible to save these people from suffering. It was possible to save these people from death – this is how Janina Ochojska, MEP and founder of the Polish Humanitarian Action spoke about the humanitarian aspect of the migration crisis in “Faktach po Faktach”. – Institutions dedicated to this should initiate procedures aimed at granting or not granting some kind of international protection. Such procedures have not been initiated – she assessed.

The migration crisis triggered by the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka is ongoing on the Polish-Belarusian border. The situation worsened in November, when migrants gathered near the border crossing in Kuźnica and tried forcibly to get to Poland. These attempts are repeated from time to time in different places on the border.

There is a state of emergency in the border area. Journalists are not allowed to work there, so information from there is transmitted almost exclusively through government sources.

“Procedures not initiated”

Janina Ochojska was asked about this crisis in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

– Institutions dedicated to this should initiate procedures aimed at granting or not granting some kind of international protection. Such procedures have not been initiated. If they were, then in relation to individual people who were saved by Grupa Granica, or by (the Foundation) Salvation, or by other volunteers, local residents. They led these people to a refugee center instead of being deported to the border, she said.

Ochojska mentioned that, in her opinion, the government should turn to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, i.e. Frontex, which provides assistance in the protection of external borders in the EU.

– Frontex knows these procedures very well, it could support officials from the Office for Foreigners. It was possible to consider (applications) right at the border: who would be entitled to the status, and who should not, and who should be deported, she proposed.

Ochojska cited the information of the German police in the program, which shows that over nine thousand people came from Belarus via Poland to Germany. – The border was not sealed, several people died, and hundreds of people were suffering unimaginable. It was possible to save these people from suffering. It was possible to save these people from death, she commented.

She was also asked what I would say to people who are “closed-hearted” to the migration crisis. – I would tell the story of those who died at the border. They are young people who came to this border with some hope. We took this hope away from them – she replied.
