The Latvian parliament supported the law on the construction of external land border infrastructure. The goal is to protect it – the official website of the local parliament said. The Committee for Monitoring the Construction of the External Border Infrastructure will be established. It will be chaired by the Minister of the Interior.

“Taking into account the changes in the international security environment and the rapid increase in the number of cases of illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border, the threats related to border protection and security have increased,” the official website of the Latvian parliament says.

In its second and last reading, the Chamber passed the act on the construction of the external land border infrastructure necessary for its protection.

The territory required for the construction of the external border infrastructure will be determined by the State Border Guard in cooperation with the State Security Agency – provided in the document.

Due to the need to immediately start construction of the external land border infrastructure, the draft law will enter into force on the day following its announcement.

In early November, Lithuania began erecting the first sections of a 3.4-meter-high steel fence.

Vilnius has allocated EUR 152 million for the construction of 500 kilometers of the barrier by September 2022.
