From Wednesday, October 28, soldiers of the Military Gendarmerie will help the police in protecting safety and public order, according to the order of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki published on Monday. According to the document, this has to do with the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic. “Similar decisions were issued this spring,” government spokesman Piotr Mueller said on Twitter.

“Due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus epidemic and the increase in COVID-19 cases in the country, soldiers of the Military Gendarmerie will provide assistance to the Police in the protection of safety and public order from October 28, 2020 until the date of the epidemic cancellation” – is the prime minister’s order published in Monitor Polski.

The basis for the ordinance is the Police Act. The order is dated October 23. It will enter into force the day after its announcement. Currently, soldiers of the Military Gendarmerie, like the Territorial Defense Forces, take part in supervising the quarantine alongside the police, and also help the volunteers of the Territorial Defense Forces supporting health protection in taking swabs for the presence of coronavirus.

The prime minister’s regulation was published during protests across the country related to the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska. Last Thursday, he ruled that the provision of the 1993 Act allowing abortion in the event of a high probability of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable life-threatening disease is unconstitutional.

“In connection with the sensational headlines regarding the support of the Military Police in the field of COVID-19-related activities, I would like to remind you that similar decisions were issued this spring. For obvious reasons, they were positively received as part of supporting the fight against the epidemic” – government spokesman Piotr wrote on Twitter Mueller.

In an interview with the Polish Press Agency, the government spokesman recalled that on March 19, the Polish Monitor published the decision of President Andrzej Duda “on the approval of the decision on the use of units and subunits of the Polish Armed Forces to help the Police.”

“It’s standard activities”

The Ministry of National Defense also noted in a Twitter entry that the Military Police also supported the Police during the first wave of the epidemic. “These are standard activities that are not related to the present demonstrations. The soldiers of the Military Police help, among others, in controlling the quarantine compliance” – stressed the ministry.
