The soldier was attacked on the section of the border near Dubicze Cerkiewne (Podlaskie Voivodeship) by one of the men who, in a group, tried to break through a steel barrier. When the soldier was blocking a breach in the steel barrier on the border using a protective shield, the perpetrator – after putting his hand through the fence – stabbed him in the chest area. The knife was stuck in the soldier's body. Branches and stones were thrown towards the injured man and the Border Guard officer who was helping him. On Thursday morning, the head of the Ministry of National Defense and the deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that the soldier was transported from the hospital in Hajnówka to the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw. The injured man's condition was still very serious. In the afternoon, the General Command of the Armed Forces announced that the soldier had died.
