Missy Elliott, one of the hip-hop pioneers, was honored on Monday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The artist pointed out that it is also a distinction for all women in hip-hop, her musical sisters, both those who are on top and those who “will be revealed”.
Missy Elliott – who is referred to in music history as the queen of hip-hop, the queen of rap and the first lady of hip-hop – unveiled her own star on Monday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame near Amoeba Records on Hollywood Boulevard.
During the ceremony, the rapper, songwriter and music producer did not hide her tears of emotion. – First of all, I wanted to thank God because I was sick, I had anxiety states, depression. And thanks to God’s grace and faith, I was afloat, otherwise I wouldn’t be standing here by the star today, she confessed.
– About 20 years ago, I was walking this way, passing these stars, and I was imagining it. And it was like a blessing to dream boldly until it finally happened. I really stand here – she added.
Missy Elliott on hip-hop pioneers
Missy Elliott noted that it is also a distinction for all women in hip-hop, her musical sisters, both those who are on top and those who are “yet to appear”.
– But great respect for the godmothers of it all, which are: Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Sha-Rock, Angie Stone, Roxanne Shanté, Yo-Yo, MC Lyte, Salt-N-Pepa. I know I must have forgotten someone, but all of you who started before me have created what we are defending. You are the foundation. It was you who ran so that we could walk, it was you who faced that we could sit comfortably today. That’s why I thank you for this moment – emphasized the rapper.
The ceremony was attended, among others, by Ciara, with whom the rapper recorded one of her greatest hits, “Lose Control”, and Lizzo, with whom she recorded “Tempo” in 2019.
Missy Elliott – who is she?
Missy Elliott, or rather Melissa Arnette Elliott, was born in Virginia in 1971. As a solo artist, she made her debut in 1997 with the album “Supa Dupa Fly”, which immediately appeared at number three on the Billboard 200 list. Missy Elliott is the best-selling rapper of all time – so far she has sold over 30 million copies of her releases.
She was one of the first artists to introduce topics such as feminism, gender equality, body positivity and sexual affirmation to hip-hop and r’n’b. According to critics, Missy Elliott revolutionized rap and hip-hop, giving them new sounds. It has also become an inspiration for pop artists: Macy Gray, Eve and Destiny’s Child. Many contemporary rap women and hip-hop representatives repeatedly emphasize in interviews that Missy Elliott is their main inspiration.
In 2020, Billboard ranked her fifth on the list of the hundred greatest music video makers of all time.
