Mlawa. A school employee found a container with a radioactive substance on its premises

On the premises of the School Complex No. 1 in Mława, an employee of the facility found a container with radioactive Cesium 137. The National Atomic Energy Agency and the Provincial Crisis Management Center were notified about the case. The investigation was initiated by the police.

According to Katarzyna Urbanowska from the press team of the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw, the container was found on Wednesday around noon in a wardrobe in a school warehouse – chemical rescue units from Ciechanów and Warsaw were called to the site; the container was secured and then tested.

– Measuring devices indicated the radioactive substance Cs 137 – said Urbanowska. She explained that a measurement taken at a distance of 5 cm indicated radiation of 0.08 microsieverts per hour. The National Atomic Energy Agency and the Provincial Crisis Management Center were notified of the discovery of the radioactive substance.

Five people came into contact with the container

As reported by Marcin Sawicki from the press team of the Mazovian Provincial Police Headquarters, the container was found by a school employee during cleaning work carried out in the absence of students. Winter holidays are currently underway in the Mazowieckie Voivodship.

– The actions of the police consisted in implementing procedures to protect people who may have come into contact with the container. Five such persons have been identified. They have been isolated and tested for harmful radioactive effects on humans – said Sawicki.

He noted that it was finally found that “the impact was so low that it does not threaten health or life.” – All people after the examinations were released home – said Sawicki.

The police launched an investigation

He added that the case was initiated under Article 163 of the Penal Code, i.e. bringing about a dangerous event related to the sudden release of nuclear energy or the release of ionizing radiation, which is punishable by imprisonment from one to 10 years.
