Moldova is one of the fastest depopulating countries in the world – said the analyst of the Eastern Studies Center Kamil Całus. The number of inhabitants of this country, not including the separatist Transnistria, is currently 2.401 million. This is a decrease by 13.9 percent in a decade.
– from obtaining independence in 1991, the population of the right -bank part Moldova (Territory controlled by Chisinas, without the separatist Transnistria) shrunk by about 35 percent – noted the kiss.
This is due to the data of the Moldovan National Institute of Statistics, which published the results of the census of the population carried out in 2024.
Over a million inhabitants followed the work
According to the kiss, the main reasons for this phenomenon are mass paid migration, which covered over 1 million citizens of this currently 2.4 million inhabitants of the country. In addition, Moldova, as a large number of European countries, records a radical decline in fertility and high mortality, associated with low anticipated life expectancy (10 years lower than the EU average).
– The population of Moldova was never very numerous, but during the Soviet Union, when the country was part of it, it grew stable, which was associated with the Demographic Stay after World War II. Just before the fall of the USSR was 3.41 million. After the so -called Transnistrian war and the actual separation of this separatist region inhabited by about 700,000 people, the newly created Moldovan state had about 3.7 million inhabitants – explained the kiss.

The country will continue to depopulate
The decrease in population over the years was as follows: in 2004 it decreased to 3.38 million, 10 years later it was only 2.8 million, in 2024 – about 2.4 million. Only the capital's agglomeration has maintained a similar number of inhabitants since 1989.
– Even in an extremely unlikely case of arrest of emigration, Moldova will continue to be depopulated due to the low rate of generations, “said the kiss. According to its calculations based on Moldovan data, due to the difference between the number of births and deaths, the population decreases by 5-10 thousand. people a year.
– The estimates of the World Bank predict that as early as 2040 the number of the population of this country will fall below 2 million, and by 2050 it will reach a level of about 1.8 million – the expert pointed out. At the same time, the kiss warned that the situation could become even worse, because the forecasts so far often turned out to be too optimistic, and the pace of depopulation higher than expected.
