– I think that when there is a change in the Presidential Palace, it will be possible to fundamentally change the law so as to civilize operational control and so that citizens will never be exposed to such experiences again – said attorney Dorota Brejza, wife of Krzysztof Brejza, MEP of the Civic Coalition, on Friday program “Tak Jest” on TVN24, referring to the current results of the work of the parliamentary committee on Pegasus. Her family was allegedly surveilled using software during the 2019 election campaign.

On Friday, the president of NIK appeared before the parliamentary committee for Pegasus Marian BanaÅ›. He said that a total of PLN 33.4 million was spent on the purchase of the system, including PLN 25 million from the Justice Fund. He also talked about difficulties during the inspection. According to BanaÅ›, inspectors were denied access to documents.

A group of researchers from Citizen Lab, operating at the University of Toronto, determined that Krzysztof Brejza was under surveillance with Pegasus 33 times before the 2019 parliamentary elections. At that time, the MP served as KO's chief of staff. The organization also confirmed the hacking of the Civic Platform's smartphone Amnesty International.

According to attorney Dorota Brejza, “significant and constructive topics” were raised during BanaÅ›'s hearing before the parliamentary committee on Friday. – First of all, Marian BanaÅ› presented the irregularities related to the purchase of Pegasus from the point of view of the audit carried out by the Supreme Audit Office, but also drew attention to the irregularities in the field of political supervision in general – she said.

– He clearly indicated that Mateusz Morawiecki as prime minister, he could not have been unaware of all these circumstances, she added.

“PiS expressway”

Attorney Brejza also referred to the procedure for purchasing Pegasus software by the government PISas BanaÅ› reported during the interrogation. – In his extremely dry, dispassionate, so to speak, speech, he indicated a timeline of events that shows what an express path PiS took to purchase and use Pegasus for political purposes – she said.

She also talked about systemic changes that could protect citizens from surveillance in the future. – I think that when there is a change in the Presidential Palace, it will be possible to fundamentally change the law so as to civilize operational control and so that citizens will never again be exposed to such experiences as we, of course, have had personally, she said.

Brejza also assessed the progress of the committee's work. – It's easy to fall into the trap that we would like to have individual people brought to court, preferably convicted, tomorrow, immediately, and so on. We need patience. We know perfectly well how the state functions, she commented.

– When it comes to the work of the investigative commission, we cannot close our eyes to the obstruction that PiS faces in its work. After all, individual summoned people do not come to committee meetings. Applications must be submitted to the court, citing various legal tricks, she emphasized.
