The age of alcohol and drug initiation drops drastically. Unfortunately, I cannot say that 11, 12, 13 years old is an exception – said Dr. Maria Banaszak from the MONAR association on TVN24. She explained that addiction in children “is influenced by a very large number of factors.” – They can be shaped both in families, in a dysfunctional environment, and in families with a very high economic and social status – she noted.

More and more often children, even 11-year-olds, come to addiction treatment centers. She told the stories of young addicts in her reportage journalist of the “Polska i Świat” program Maria Mikołajewska.

– Unfortunately, I cannot say that the age of 11, 12, 13 as the age of drug initiation is an exception. The age of alcohol and drug initiation drops drastically. The fact that it reaches the age of 13-14 becomes the norm – she said.

– It used to be possible to say that our work was resocialisation, rehabilitation. We are socializing now. We teach people to live again. They never had the chance to be sober adults.

“It’s almost always a way to deal with difficult emotions”

Addiction among children, she explained, is “influenced by a very large number of factors.” – In fact, drug addiction likes extremes. It’s a matter of emotional and social deficits. They can develop both in families, in a dysfunctional environment, and in families with a very high economic and social status, Banaszak pointed out.

– Escaping into psychoactive substances is almost always a way to deal with difficult emotions. Fear, lack of love, lack of security, too much pressure, too many expectations and challenges.

She added that “curiosity is the reason why the first experiments happen.” – It is true that the first situations, the first contact of young people with drugs, are social, peer situations, they result from curiosity, the desire to appear in a social group. However, it is not the case that every person who tries a psychoactive substance becomes addicted – she noted.

– It is about who will stay with these substances for longer, for whom they will be attractive enough to continue taking them until the addiction process begins and they lose control over their lives, that is determined by various problems – said the expert.
