The expansion of the road network on which tolls are collected is planned for November 1 this year, said Anna SzumaĆska, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Infrastructure. However, this does not apply to all vehicles.
– The toll road network has not been expanded since 2017. Since then, many new sections of class A national roads and class S national roads have been put into use in Poland. The length of the new road sections to be tolled is approx. 1.6 thousand. km. Currently, fees are collected for approx. 3.6 thousand. km of national roads of all categories – said the spokeswoman.
The expansion of the toll road network is assumed in the draft regulation of the Council of Ministers amending the regulation on national roads or their sections on which electronic tolls are collected and the electronic toll rates. The government is scheduled to deal with this project on October 22.
“Toll rates depend on the weight of the vehicles and the exhaust emission standard”
The spokeswoman emphasized that the ministry does not plan to introduce fees for passenger cars and motorcycles for traveling on road sections managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Currently, fees are collected for approx. 3.6 thousand. km of national roads of all categories.
– The expansion of the toll road network is a continuation of the policy of covering newly built roads with tolls since 2011, and is also one of the actions that Poland has undertaken to take as part of the National Reconstruction Plan. The electronic toll is based on the principles of 'user pays' and 'polluter pays', which means that toll rates depend on the weight of the vehicles and the exhaust emission standard. Importantly, revenues from tolls for heavy vehicles and buses go to the National Road Fund, which finances the construction of new roads and renovations of the existing network,” SzumaĆska noted.
In Poland, toll collection is carried out by e-TOLL and is carried out using a satellite system. This means that there is no need to install devices for this purpose on the roads.
