Aleksandr Surikov, Russian ambassador to Mozambique, was found dead in his residence. The police received information from the Russian consul Yuri Doroshenko not to take any action related to performing an autopsy.

Russian ambassador to Mozambique Aleksandr Surikov was found dead in his residence in Maputo, police said, quoted by the local press on Sunday.

Surikov, 68, died on Saturday night “in circumstances that have not yet been explained,” the Mozambican daily “O Pais” reported. The diplomat has been on a mission in this country since 2017.

The police headquarters in Maputo announced that they learned about the ambassador's death late, “after the body had been transported to the main municipal hospital” in the capital. When the officers learned about the supposedly “sudden death” of the diplomat, they went to a medical facility, but “the body had already been placed in the hospital mortuary,” the statement said.

The police officers who arrived at the hospital received information from the Russian consul Yuri Doroshenko not to take any action related to performing an autopsy. – The police only took photos of the deceased's body in the mortuary (…), as well as photos inside the residence – it was emphasized. According to the Russian authorities, the ambassador's sudden death could have been the result of a stroke.
