The trial of Jakub A., accused of the brutal murder of 10-year-old Kristina from Mrowiny, is to begin in the District Court in Świdnica (Dolnośląskie Voivodeship) on Tuesday. During the investigation, several hundred biological traces were examined and several dozen expert opinions from various fields were obtained. And these – as the prosecutor informed – are to leave no doubt that the girl was killed by A., a friend of the family. Earlier, the man confessed to the crime. He is facing life imprisonment.
On June 13, 2019, Kristina finished her lessons at about 1 p.m., left school in the center of Mrowin and headed for a house about a kilometer away. She was last seen 200 meters from her place of residence. But she never got there.
First, the family looked for her on their own. Then the services were notified. Firefighters checked the surrounding water reservoirs, a police helicopter searched the area from the sky. The 10-year-olds were looking for adults, on foot and by car. The children rode bicycles. There was no sign of Kristina.
A few hours later – in the forest near the village of Pożarzysko (five kilometers from Mrowiny) – random people stumbled upon the body of the girl they were looking for.
Initially, the prosecution also reported that the crime was sexual in nature.
Detained a few days later
An intensive search for the perpetrator continued for several days. The police appealed for help to the inhabitants of the surrounding towns, as well as drivers who were passing there and could see something suspicious.
At the press conference, the Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro assured that the arrest of the 10-year-old’s murderer was a matter of time. He emphasized that for the Polish prosecutor’s office and the police it was a matter of honor.
On June 16, 2019, a 22-year-old student, Jakub A. The man heard the charge of murder with particular cruelty, as well as the charge of inciting a friend to complicity in the murder. He was to offer PLN 10,000 for help.
Attempts to confuse investigators
The prosecutor’s office did not inform about the motives of the murder. It is known that the mother of the murdered 10-year-old was Jakub A’s aunt. The man knew the girl and he was supposed to plan the crime down to the smallest detail. Investigators’ leads were to be confused by the fake of Kristina’s sexual abuse. A. – according to the prosecutor’s office and the police – wanted the suspicions to fall on the pedophile.
– He made efforts to find the perpetrator of the crime. When he found it difficult, he searched for all possible material relating to sexual crimes involving children. He was interested in scientific studies as well as materials from the media. He so scrupulously wanted to build a false clue for us that there is a sexual deviant behind the crime – the informant related to the investigation explained to the journalist of tvn24.pl.
According to the investigators, A. left his phone in Wrocław so that – on the day of the murder – he would log in to the capital of Lower Silesia. It was also supposed to appear in the place where the surveillance camera registered it. He drove to the scene of the crime in a rented car, bought new clothes, and put on shoes of the wrong size. All this to distract suspicions.
Defender A. Katarzyna Bórawska said that her client “expresses regret and remorse”. – On behalf of Jakub A., I would like to apologize to the parents of the aggrieved Kristina, her siblings and the whole family. (…) He also asks not to make any moral assessments of his actions due to the fact that he had been attending psychological therapy for over a year. In addition, he treated himself with psychotropic drugs – emphasized attorney Bórawska.
Prosecutors consulted on the sanity of a Wroclaw student suspected of the murder of 10-year-old Kristina. The man was examined by two expert psychiatrists. Later, they asked to join the team of two more experts: a psychologist and a sexologist. In total, they met the suspect several times.
– The opinion sent to us shows that at the time of committing the alleged acts – incitement to murder and murder – Jakub A. was fully sane. In their opinion, the experts did not find any sexual preference disorders in the suspect, said Tomasz Orepuk, spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Świdnica in January 2020.
Dozens of expert opinions and indictments
In May 2021, almost two years after Kristina’s death, an indictment was filed with the District Court in Świdnica against Jakub A. – On the way back from school, the aggrieved person got into A.’s car, who was a friend of the family. The accused took her to the forest, where, acting with particular cruelty, he committed the crime of murder – he quoted excerpts from the Orepuk magazine. As he added, during the trial experiment, A. spoke in detail about what happened and revealed circumstances “that only the perpetrator of the murder could know”.
During the procedure concerning the death of a 10-year-old girl, several hundred biological traces were examined. – In the course of the investigation, several dozen opinions were obtained from various fields, including 43 genetic opinions on the identification of several hundred protected biological traces and opinions of experts in the field of chemistry, dactyloscopy, traseology, psychiatry, psychology and sexology – mentioned the spokesman of the Świdnica prosecutor’s office.
Jakub A. – continuously since June 2019 – is temporarily arrested.
