Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that Azerbaijan had been presented with a draft of a full peace treaty to end the long-running dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are in conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, an area that lies within Azerbaijan but whose population is predominantly Armenian. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinian stated that the proposed agreement would provide for monitoring mechanisms for both sides to prevent violations of the peace agreement.

The next stage of work on the peace treaty

Pashinyan said that his country had thus completed “another stage of work on the draft peace treaty and the establishment of diplomatic relations” with Azerbaijan.

“This document must be acceptable to Azerbaijan, and its signing must bring lasting peace,” he said.

Two wars were fought for control of the Armenian enclave of Azerbaijan, claiming tens of thousands of lives.
