First information the withdrawal of Russian troops from the disputed territory appeared in April. The president's spokesman mentioned it at the time Russia Dmitry Peskov. After several dozen days, the Ministry of Defense Azerbaijan reported that all Russians taking part in the stabilization mission had left their bases in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Russians have left Nagorno-Karabakh

“On June 12, the process of withdrawing the contingent of peacekeeping forces of the Russian Federation, which was temporarily stationed in Azerbaijan after the Patriotic War, ended. The personnel, weapons and equipment of the peacekeeping contingent have completely left our territory“- we read in the announcement.

From the beginning of its existence, the contingent consisted of 1,960 soldiers with small arms, 90 armored personnel carriers, 380 cars and special equipment.

A few weeks ago, he commented on the peace mission in Nagorno-Karabakh, among others: Alexei Zhuravlev, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee. As the Russian politician emphasized, all the tasks assigned to the soldiers had been fulfilled.

– The civilian population was rescued, helped during evacuation, treatment and provided with water and food. Now the mission can be considered completedwhich means it's time for our soldiers to come home, he said.

– The Russian contingent was essential there during the conflict and played an important role, so that there will be no large-scale bloodshed there in 2023, standing between the warring armies. Moreover, sometimes this was achieved only at the cost of the lives of our troops, remember that there were several dead and wounded, he added.

Russian troops in Nagorno-Karabakh. Criticism of international organizations

The Russian military contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh began to function on the basis of the declaration on the ceasefire signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia after the end of the Second Karabakh War. As part of the agreement signed on November 9, 2020, the parties to the conflict decided that Russian soldiers will be stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh for at least five years.

Despite the constant presence and obligation to ensure security in the region, military clashes have occurred several times between the armies of Armenia and Azerbaijan since the formation of the contingent. At the end of 2022, the International Crisis Group reported that the Russian military was indifferent to the actions of Azerbaijani soldierswho escalated tension in the region.

“Last year, peacekeepers failed to prevent several incidents. In March and August, Azerbaijani troops occupied new territory in Nagorno-Karabakh, including strategic mountain positions. In September, Azerbaijani forces occupied the territory of Armenia itself. Each clash became more and more bloody,” it was written.

Until the next incident occurred in December 2022 in the so-called region Lachin corridor. This was temporarily blocked by Azerbaijani soldiers. Officials in Yerevan openly blamed Russian peacekeepers failure to fulfill obligations to ensure the functioning of the corridor. This ultimately led to the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh and a humanitarian disaster. There was a shortage of food, water, medicine and basic products in the region. Residents had no access to electricity and gas for many weeks.
