National Bank of Poland with high inflation in Poland. Non-governmental organizations want to know the cost of the campaign – a request from the Civil Development Forum and the Economic Freedom Foundation

Narodowy Bank Polski is conducting an information campaign on high inflation in Poland. The Civil Development Forum (FOR) and the Economic Freedom Foundation announced on Thursday that they would submit an application for access to public information. – It seems that taxpayers should know what the cost of this propaganda campaign is, because it has nothing to do with an information campaign – said Marek Tatała, vice-president of the Economic Freedom Foundation.

In mid-May this year. A banner was hung on the building of the National Bank of Poland, which read: “Burning the NBP and the government of the high inflation is the Kremlin’s narrative.” Two “main causes of inflation” were also listed: Russian aggression in Ukraineas well as the pandemic “and its effects”.

In the following days, the central bank decided to extend the campaign. An advertising car with a billboard, the content of which is the same as the one on the banner, also went to the streets of Warsaw. The recording in this case was posted on Twitter by Szymon Machalica, associated with the internet portal zoneinwestorow.pl.

Now, this activity of the NBP wants to be scrutinized by the Civic Development Forum and the Economic Freedom Foundation.

What is the cost of the NBP campaign?

– Today we say I check the president (NBP Adam) Glapiński. We have prepared a public information request. We ask Mr. President about spending on the most high-profile campaigns that have been mentioned recently – the banner hanging on the facade of the National Bank of Poland, cars or semi-trailers driving around Warsaw, TV spots, sponsored articles – said Patryk Wachowiec during Thursday’s press briefing, FOR legal analyst.

– We do not know anything about it, we do not know which organizational unit deals with it, we do not know about the costs, whether these expenses were justified or economical – he added.

Wachowiec pointed out that “the independence of the central bank – just like the independence of the courts, which we talk about so much – is extremely important from the perspective of citizens.” – The point is for citizens to trust that the National Bank of Poland performs its tasks on their behalf and for them, and not for the ruling party – he emphasized.

– It is also about excluding any suspicions from market participants, financial institutions, including foreign ones, that the president of the National Bank of Poland is a biased person and makes his decisions in favor of the parliamentary majority, guided by short-term electoral profit, and not by long-term building a stable economic growth and caring for the value of Polish money – added a representative of FOR.

Marek Tatała, vice-president of the Economic Freedom Foundation, pointed out that the cost of the NBP’s campaign on high inflation in Poland is not known. – It seems that taxpayers should know what the cost of this propaganda campaign is, because it has nothing to do with the information campaign – said Tatała, adding that many factors contribute to inflation.

– Economists study the causes of inflation and it is obvious that many factors contribute to it. This is, of course, a war, a pandemic issue, but a pandemic in connection with what the central bank and politicians were doing, which was adding a lot of fiat money to the economy, so here we have an element of monetary policy. It was Adam Glapiński and the Monetary Policy Council that lowered interest rates to a record low level, which also contributed to inflation – explained the vice-president of the Economic Freedom Foundation.

“It is true that inflation in Poland is falling quickly, as predicted by the NBP, thanks to the activities of the NBP and the Monetary Policy Council, but the correct, general understanding of the sources of these processes is inextricably linked to the implementation of the tasks of the NBP,” emphasized the representatives of the central bank.

The campaign with the use of advertising cars is carried out by Jet Line. “The NBP is the principal of the advertising campaign on the ‘main causes of inflation’ on the MOBIJet advertising medium” – informed TVN24 Biznes Andrzej Słomka, managing director of Jet Line.

We asked e.g. about the number of cars used in the campaign, the area of ​​operation and the cost of the campaign, as well as its timing, but the company did not provide such information. “We are bound by a trade secret. We carry out several dozen campaigns a month and we approach each of them with the greatest care “, emphasized Slomka.
