The Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, would like the National Food Holding to be established within six months. “We are going to step up the work on the NHS very much,” he said. According to the head of the ministry, the provisions contained in the amendment to the act on animal protection, the so-called five for animals, were not fully thought out.
High five for animals. Henryk Kowalczyk on regulations
Henryk Kowalczyk, appointed on Tuesday as the minister of agriculture, admitted that the provisions contained in the amendment to the act on animal protection (the so-called high five for animals), incl. prohibiting breeding for fur and limiting ritual slaughter, “have not been fully thought through” (these solutions, after being passed by the Sejm, caused protests from agricultural circles; the Senate introduced amendments, but they were not put to a vote in the Sejm, so the legislative process was not completed – ed.).
The minister also indicated that the European Green Deal is to improve animal welfare. He explained that it is about, for example, voluntarily increasing the area of cages or larger positions for cows. – We will promote these solutions – he stressed.
He also added that farmers do not need to be persuaded to take such actions, because “every decent farmer cares about animals very much, because it is his income”.
National Food Holding – when will it be created?
Asked if he intends to fight food oligopolies, Kowalczyk said that an act was being prepared to counteract the unfair use of contractual advantage in trade in agricultural and food products. It introduces a wider scope of competences of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection.
When asked when the National Food Holding will be established, Kowalczyk indicated that “we will accelerate work on the NHS very much”. He said that he had talked about it with the Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin.
– I would like this holding to be established in six months – said Kowalczyk. The NHS concept assumes the consolidation of companies from the food industry with the participation of the State Treasury based on Krajowa Spółka Cukrowa SA
