National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk has appointed a team to investigate investigations suspected of being political, as Maciej Duda, a journalist from “Superwizjer” TVN and tvn24.pl, has learned. The team will look into cases from 2016-2023, the period when Law and Justice was in power.
“Gazeta Wyborcza” was the first to report on the incident.
The team, established on August 16, is to investigate investigations suspected of being political or conducted without a legal reason. The order states that the team will investigate cases that occurred between 2016 and 2023, i.e. during the period when he ruled PIS.
The team will investigate “cases of public interest due to their subject matter and nature, conducted and concluded in the years 2016-2023 in the common organizational units of the prosecutor's office” – we read in the content of the order of the National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk.
The team's work will include analysis of: “the correctness of conducting and setting the directions for the proceedings, the level and efficiency of carrying out activities, as well as the justification and substantive nature of making final decisions and filing indictments.”
The team consists of: Katarzyna Kwiatkowska (chairwoman), Marek Wełna (deputy), Krzysztof Wójcik, Janusz Onyszczuk and Mariusz Krasoń.
The final report is due by November 30, 2024.
“GW”: the team will investigate the case of the “envelope for a priest”
As reported by “Gazeta Wyborcza”, “this concerns both the proceedings conducted and those that were discontinued for political reasons”. “GW” gave the example of an “envelope for a priest” that the PiS chairman was supposed to have accepted Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
“It was part of the 'two towers' affair – buildings that Kaczyński wanted to build in the centre of Warsaw, on a plot of land belonging to the Srebrna company associated with PiS. To start the investment, the signature of Father Rafał Sawicz, a member of the management board of the foundation managing Srebrna, was needed. The priest wanted PLN 50,000 for the signature” – we read in “GW”.
According to Maciej Duda, the team may also deal with the issue of the “Kwaśniewski villa” case taken up by the Katowice prosecutor's office in 2016. The District Prosecutor's Office in Łódź launched an investigation in June. The prosecutor's office suspects that Tomasz Kaczmarek, known as agent Tomek, was ordered by his then bosses to CBA, Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsikto prepare false operational notes. These were later to serve as alleged evidence that Jolanta and Aleksander Kwaśniewski they owned a villa in Kazimierz Dolny.
