From the point of view of Poland, the most important achievement of the NATO summit in Vilnius is the change in the approach to the Alliance’s activities, especially on the eastern flank, and the so-called regional defense plans, said reserve colonel Maciej Matysiak on TVN24. He also said that the SCALP cruise missiles that France has committed to supply to Ukraine “will be able to increase the range of action of the Ukrainian army.” The expert emphasized that “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affects the entire security structure in the world.”

The second and last day of the NATO summit takes place in the Lithuanian capital on Wednesday. The main topics of the summit are: Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, prospects for Kiev’s accession to the Alliance, and Sweden’s accession to NATO. On Wednesday, there will be meeting of the newly established NATO-Ukraine Council.

– Most commentators focus on Ukraine’s possible membership (in NATO – ed.) and, in fact, Sweden’s already certain membership in the Alliance. On the other hand, fewer people pay attention to what is the de facto achievement of this summit, i.e. a change in the approach, philosophy to the Alliance’s activities, especially on the eastern flank, and the so-called regional defense plans. From the point of view of the eastern flank, especially Poland, this is the most important achievement of this NATO summit in Vilnius, said reserve colonel Maciej Matysiak on TVN24.

He pointed out that the most important meetings during the summit “take place behind the scenes, outside this official message”. – Heads of state and those who are substantive in the leadership of the alliance hold talks before the very summit, when the most important players come together and in these behind-the-scenes meetings, at the table rather only courtesy – said the military man.

Speaking about Sweden’s accession to NATO, Matysiak pointed out that “the NATO-Russia border is not only a land border, which has expanded with Finland’s membership, but also a sea border, which we will have much larger as an alliance with Sweden’s membership.” – The Baltic Sea will become an internal basin of the Alliance and Russia. Here, the role of Sweden cannot be overestimated, because the Swedish navy, reconnaissance and intelligence elements of Sweden are crucial for security, including ours – he said.

“We cannot treat Ukraine and Russia’s invasion of the country in isolation”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, welcoming Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to the NATO summit in Vilnius on Wednesday morning, raised issues related to security in the Indo-Pacific region. The Norwegian emphasized the lack of tolerance for violations of international law by countries such as North Korea.

“We cannot treat Ukraine and Russia’s invasion of that country in isolation. From our point of view, of course, this is the most important. On the other hand, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has infected and is affecting the entire security structure in the world, the expert argued. He added that “so far we have had such a division of the post-Cold War world into NATO countries and Warsaw Pact countries, and later into Russia and NATO countries.”

– Today, in fact, Russia is falling a little from this pedestal of a power being the first-line opponent. Of course, it’s dangerous and needs to be limited in this aggressive ability, but the balance of power is a bit elsewhere. These are rather countries centered around China, including Russia, which is already somewhat vassalized by China, and the countries of the democratic bloc, whose axis of rotation are the United States, the European Union and NATO, so this division is completely different and we cannot have a conflict in Ukraine be treated separately from the rest, explained the colonel.

French SCALP missiles “will be able to increase the range of action of the Ukrainian army”

France has started deliveries of a significant number of SCALP cruise missiles to Ukraine. The missiles will be integrated into “non-Western” combat aircraft and are to be used only within the borders of Ukraine recognized by the international community. The missiles can hit targets up to 250 km away, Reuters reported, citing information obtained from military sources.

– Ukraine has been making very strong requests for some time to receive missiles, rockets, artillery, which will be able to increase the range of operation of the Ukrainian army – noted Matysiak.

In his opinion, Ukraine will certainly use long-range missiles, e.g. to attack Russian forces in Crimea. – Because Crimea is quite a key territory for Ukraine and Russia for many reasons, for tactical reasons, but also for propaganda reasons – he stressed.
