The US House of Representatives adopted a resolution supporting the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. In the United States, the final decision on ratifying Alliance enlargement rests with the Senate.

The resolution was supported by 394 congressmen in the House of Representatives. 18 were against – all of them are Republican Party politicians who belong to the group’s isolationist wing.

The text of the resolution expresses support for the accession of both Nordic countries to the Alliance, calls on other member states to formally approve the enlargement FOR THIS and delivering on defense spending pledges of 2 percent of GDP. The Chamber also warned Russia against “hostile reaction” to the admission of new NATO members.

The formal decision rests with the Senate

The resolution is mainly a symbolic move, because the formal decision on the ratification of treaties rests with the Senate. President of the USA Joe Biden sent accession protocols Sweden and Finland to the chamber on July 11 and urged her to end the trial swiftly. The decision on this issue is expected before the end of July. So far, half of the 30 member states of the Alliance, including Poland, have already taken this step.
