The European Commission will announce next steps on Wednesday to launch a program of joint purchases of gas by countries in global markets, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said on Tuesday.

– Tomorrow our services will announce the next steps regarding the joint purchase of gas, and thanks to this, by diversifying our gas supplies away from RussiaRussia has less room to manipulate our markets, said Kadri Simson at a press conference.

The Commission is also preparing a proposal to extend beyond this winter the voluntary target for EU countries to reduce gas consumption by 15%. in the winter months. The EU introduced this target last year to avoid energy shortages.

A few days ago, Simson said that she could join the shopping together Ukraine. As Reuters wrote, the first contact for joint gas purchases would be signed already this summer.

Less gas consumption

In an effort to reduce Russian supplies and reduce dependence on imported hydrocarbons, EU countries agreed last July to reduce gas consumption by 15% between August 2022 and March 2023. compared to the average of the last five years. Demand for gas in the EU has turned out to be lower than expected, thanks in large part to a mild winter and high prices of “blue fuel” that have prompted households and businesses to cut back.

According to Eurostat, gas consumption in the EU fell by 19.3%. between August and January compared to the average consumption in the same period between 2017 and 2022.
