Karol Nawrocki declares that if he becomes president, he will not sign the bill allowing abortion. He will not even agree to a return to the so-called abortion compromise from before the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal chaired by Julia Przyłębska, which sparked mass demonstrations by women.

No previous words of a presidential candidate supported by PiS have caused such a sharp reaction from some women in the Sejm.

– He showed all women the middle finger – comments Sylwia Bielawska, MP from the Civic Coalition. – Mr. Nawrocki's words prove that he deeply respects women's safety – says Magdalena Biejat, deputy speaker of the Senate from the Left. – This is extreme and very dangerous – says Monika Rosa, an MP from the Civic Coalition.

Because what arouses opposition from the members of the government coalition is not so much the fact that Karol Nawrocki is opposed to any liberalization of abortion law in Poland, because there is no surprise here, and his views on this matter were known, but discussions have been sparked again by such an unambiguous declaration. Nawrocki regarding what he will do when he is elected president and a bill restoring the legal status before the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal reaches his desk.

The breaking of that compromise brought thousands, not only women, to the streets.

– I would not sign the bill on the return to the abortion compromise – says Karol Nawrocki, president of the Institute of National Remembrance and candidate of Law and Justice for president. – As a future president, I could not allow children with Down syndrome to be aborted – he adds.

Explaining his decision, Karol Nawrocki referred to his views, faith and connections with the Church. Then he tried to explain that it was a matter of the constitution and that he was ready for a completely new compromise.

– I cannot sign the compromise from the 1990s due to legal comments – explains Karol Nawrocki.

Nawrocki in opposition to some PiS leaders

However, with such a clear declaration, the PiS-backed presidential candidate put himself in opposition to many PiS leaders who, like former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, have been trying to soften the party's position in recent months, repeating that violating the compromise was a mistake, just as the proposal was a mistake. to the Constitutional Tribunal, because this decision triggered a great mobilization of various groups of voters, including those who had never voted before.

– I support a return to the abortion compromise – said Law and Justice MP Mateusz Morawiecki in April last year. – A complete ban on abortion is absolutely unacceptable in society – he pointed out.

Hence such statements by the PiS president after his party lost power.

“We are aware that the state should not interfere with people's privacy. We are aware that the decision of the Constitutional Tribunal on abortion violated this feeling and that is why it caused such strong opposition,” said the president of Law and Justice, Jarosław Kaczyński.

– We all remember this extraordinary anger of Polish women, this march first through the streets and then to the ballot boxes – recalls Aleksandra Gajewska, deputy minister of family, labor and social policy from the Civic Coalition.

Work on two bills is underway

Work on two bills is currently underway in the Sejm. One concerns the restoration of the situation prior to the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska, and – as we hear – there is agreement on it within the government coalition.

– Polish women and men, not only Polish women, want women to be able to decide about themselves, to have choices, and Karol Nawrocki says: no, you will not choose, I will decide and so will the man from Nowogrodzka – comments Agnieszka Pomaska, an MP from the Civic Coalition.

If the Sejm had adopted such a compromise bill during the election campaign, it would have reached President Andrzej Duda's desk.
