The freighter Fremantle Highwa has been on fire off the coast of the Netherlands since Tuesday night. There are almost four thousand cars on board, including almost 500 electric ones. A spokesman for the government’s water management agency said the vessel would be towed to safety on Saturday or Sunday.

A 200-meter special car-carrying ship sailed from Bremen, Germany, to Egypt. It caught fire in the North Sea, 30 km north of the Dutch island of Ameland. The Dutch services immediately started a rescue operation. 22 of the 23 crew members were saved. One person died.

The Fremantle Highway vessel is currently located about 23 km north of Terschelling Island, between the shipping lanes, and is already connected to the German tug Fairplay 30. depending on the weather situation – it will be possible to tow the vessel deep into the North Sea. “It’s a better starting position for rescue companies and the coast guard,” the spokesman said.

The fire is still raging, but less intense than in recent days. On Friday, rescuers were finally able to board the ship as the temperature had dropped enough.

Almost 500 electric cars on board

A vessel sailing under the flag of Panama and chartered by the Japanese company K Line carried 3,783 passenger cars, including almost 500 electric cars. Originally, it was reported that there were only 25 electricians, but then the Japanese shipowner corrected these reports.
