Netherlands. Judgment on the “robbery of the century”. Thieves of valuables in Amsterdam will spend between 2 and 15 years in prison

A court in Amsterdam sentenced eight perpetrators of valuables theft to prison terms of between two and fifteen years. In the “heist of the century”, as the media described it, which took place in May 2021, the target was an armored vehicle containing gold, platinum and precious stones with an estimated value of 67 million euros. It was established that the thieves seized valuables worth over 14 million euros.

On Monday, a court in Amsterdam sentenced two participants in the robbery to fifteen years in prison. The others will spend between 2 and 12 years behind bars. – Such a brutal attack has almost never been seen before in the Netherlands – emphasized the judge while justifying the verdict.

Heist, chase and shootout

May 19, 2021 in Shots rang out in Amsterdam. As it turned out, armed criminals robbed a transport with precious stones, gold and platinum, worth 67 million euros. The investigation found that the thieves had stolen loot worth €14.5 million.

The police blocked part of Amsterdam and the thieves fled in cars for 11 kilometers to the village of Broek in the municipality of Waterland. According to the police, there was a shootout with officers, as a result of which one of the attackers was killed. “The policemen were shot with automatic weapons,” Metropolitan Police Chief Frank Paauw later told reporters.

Three helicopters and rescue services and dogs took part in the operation, which tracked down two men hidden in garbage bins. In total, six suspects who spoke French were detained. They wore bulletproof vests and were armed with rifles, including an AK-47. Two more people were later detained, one of whom, with Belgian nationality, was detained in Guinea.

So far, the loot worth four million euros has not been found.
