Dutch gynecologist Jonathan M., who is the father of more than 500 children worldwide, was ordered not to donate semen on Friday. The decision was taken by the court in The Hague. The 41-year-old was sued by Donorkind, an organization for donor children, and the mother of two.
In the Netherlands, there are guidelines for clinics that the donor can have a maximum of 25 children. Meanwhile, the 41-year-old fathered 102 children in Dutch clinics in 2017 alone, according to information from the association of gynecologists NVOG. Donorkind, an organization for donor children, estimates that there are over 500 donors around the world.
The foundation demanded that the court prohibit the man from continuing to donate semen and order all donations to be destroyed.
“It can be psychologically extremely difficult for children that their father fathered so many offspring,” the foundation’s Ties van der Meer argued. It also pointed to the risk of related people getting into relationships without even knowing it, which is “genetically dangerous.”
There is a verdict
A court in The Hague granted the organization’s request on Friday and banned the man from donating semen.
If the 41-year-old does not comply with the court’s decision, he will have to pay a fine of 100,000 euros each time he donates semen. At the same time, he will have to pay a fine if he posts announcements on donor platforms and forums. In this case, the fine can be up to 10,000. euro.
