The European Commission is to launch on July 1 the pilot version of the EU digital identity portfolio. The new tool is to enable EU citizens to verify identity at this age in a safe and remote way.
Currently, the EC is working on the EU digital identity portfolio (EU Digital Identity Wallet, EID), used to verify the identity (at this age), but – contrary to reports – it will be fully available only at the end of 2026. On July 1, the pilot version will start, which will consist in testing the software in the Member States. For now, five countries have applied to the program: France, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Greece – Ke spokesman Thomas Reifnier told PAP. There is no Poland on this list. It is not true that the application will be mandatory. Pursuant to the EU Act on digital services, internet platforms are obliged to protect minors, including in some cases to verify age, but it is their responsibility, what methods they will use for this purpose. The use of the application developed by the EC is only one of the options. – It is social platforms that should introduce age verification mechanisms. It is to work similar to the mobile
EID is to work similarly to the Polish mobititer and serve as a safe way to store personal data. It will allow you to verify the identity of a person who wants to use public or private services. All citizens, residents and enterprises in the EU will be able to use the application. Only the data that is crucial to access to a given service will be made available to entities. For example, for social platforms or pornographic pages it will be age, and car rentals – a driving license. – They will not have insight into other user data stored in the portfolio, because privacy protection is crucial for us – noted Reifnier.
