The New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław returns with the most interesting film titles of recent months. In the capital of Lower Silesia, films awarded, among others, in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, San Sebastian and at the Sundance festival will be shown.
The New Horizons International Film Festival will be held for the 21st time this year. The organizers have prepared over 600 live screenings in cinemas (and not only) and online, because this year the festival will be held in hybrid form (August 12-22, stationary; August 12-29 – online screenings).
New Horizons 2021. Festival gems in one place
And movie fans have a lot to be happy about. The festival will open on August 12 with “Titane” Julia Ducournau, appreciated by the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. But this is not the only gem from the Cote d’Azur, because you will also be able to see: “Anette” by Leos Carax (awarded for the best directing), “Knee Ahed” Nadava Lapida and “Memoria” by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (both titles won the Jury Prize), “Drive My Car” by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (awarded for the best script) or “Hero” by Asghar Farhadi. In addition, Cannes films will appear in the capital of Lower Silesia: “Vortex” Gaspar Noah, “Everything went well” Francois Ozon, “Rush” by Kiriłło Serebrennikov, “Bergman’s Island” by Mia Hansen-Love, “Paris, 13th arrondissement” by Jacques Audiard, “On the way!” Panaha Panahi and Manuel Nieto Zas’s “Employer and Employee”.

The program of New Horizons also includes films from this year’s Berlinale, including the Golden Bear winner “Unfortunate Number or Crazy Porn” by Romanian director Radu Jude. The audience will also see titles from the Sundance festival (“Censor” by Welsh director Prano Bailey-Bond).
New Horizons – film competition
According to tradition, the festival will host the New Horizons International Film Competition. 12 titles from Austria, France, Tunisia, the United States and Vietnam, among others, will be judged by a jury chaired by Olga Tokarczuk. Poland will be represented by Piotr Stasik’s film “Moths”.
Fans of our home cinema will be able to see Katarzyna Klimkiewicz’s “Because there’s sex in me” and take part in the world premiere of Łukasz Grzegorzek’s “My wonderful life”, attended by Agata Buzek and Jacek Braciak, among others.
On August 14, Mariusz Wilczyński – the creator of the award-winning full-length animation “Kill it and leave this town” – will prepare a live animated film “The Devil knows no bounds”. The performance will be accompanied by music by Marcel Markowski, cellist of Sinfonia Varsovia, also performed live.
New Horizons. Not only in the cinema
The screenings organized as part of the festival will take place not only in the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema, but also in the Lower Silesian Film Center, the Capitol Musical Theater and on the Wrocław market square.
In addition, the festival program includes artistic events: the exhibition “Z (don’t panic, kiss me)” or a performance by Sonia Wieder-Atherton, film heroines and companion, the life of Chantal Akerman.
The 21st New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław will be held on 12-22 August.
