The Mazovian Provincial Conservator of Monuments ordered the owners of the 19th-century granary in the Modlin Fortress to carry out conservation works. Last year, the case of a neglected monument went to court.

He explained that the work is to stop the destruction of the facility. The MWKZ commenced proceedings in this case in 2021. The decision was made immediately enforceable. In addition, the office also notified the law enforcement authorities about the damage to the monument.

The case of the historic granary in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is in courtthe current owners are accused. – Agnieszka and Dariusz B. are accused that in the period from December 22, 2010 to March 22, 2021 in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, acting jointly and in agreement, as co-perpetual usufructuaries of the property on which the monument in the form of the Granary building is located Bank Polski, built in 1844 according to the design of the architect Jan Jakub Gay, damaged the above-mentioned monument – said Katarzyna Skrzeczkowska, spokeswoman for the Warsaw-Praga District Prosecutor’s Office.

It was supposed to be a hotel

Prosecutor Skrzeczkowska pointed out that the new owners led to the deterioration of the facade of the building, the chipping of the stonework of the buttresses in the lower parts of the granary and the stonework of the pedestals and the crowning cornice, the growth of volunteers on the crown of the walls, the loss of stability of the walls of the granary, causing excessive deterioration of its functional properties and technical efficiency. The spokeswoman added that the long-term omissions of perpetual usufructuaries of the real estate on which the building is located led to the deterioration of its condition and carried the risk of losing a unique monument, which, if renovated, could become one of the country’s greatest tourist attractions.

The granary was sold by the city of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in November 2010. Then the owner presented a project that assumed that a new part would be added to the existing building and a five-star hotel would be built there. They were supposed to be luxury apartments, helipad, marina for sailors. The historic part of the building was also to be preserved.

The history of the granary

The construction of the Granary of Bank Polski began in the times of the Kingdom of Poland, in 1832. The creator of the project was Jan Jakub Gay. The monumental building was built on a rectangular plan. From the Narew side, it had three open portals. The middle portal, the largest, was equipped with lifting devices, with stairs reaching the water table. From the south, from the land, the building had one centrally located portal. The thickness of the walls on the ground floor is 180 cm. The granary is a Neo-Renaissance building, four storeys from the outside and six storeys inside. Many decorative and practical elements, such as mooring handles in the shape of a horseshoe with a beautiful cast of an old man’s head, give this building an amazing charm. Its construction was completed in 1844.

The purpose of the granary has always been to store food. Originally, in the years 1844-1852, it was a grain warehouse. Later, until 1939, it served as a provisions warehouse for the military commissariat and a war warehouse.

The granary was used until September 1939. During the offensive of the German army on the Modlin fortress, the building was bombed. It most likely happened between September 22 and 27.

The granary was largely destroyed. The western wing of the granary, which does not exist today, was demolished just after the war. The building has been in the register of monuments of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship since April 3, 1957.
