Three people suspected of extorting PLN 55,000 using the “grandson” method were arrested. The woman realized she had been scammed as soon as she transferred the money.

On March 14, a resident of Nowy Targ received a call from scammers who convinced her that her granddaughter caused traffic accident. She believed that her loved one should avoid arrest, she must pay a “bail” of PLN 55,000.

The woman gave the callers money in foreign currency. Soon after, she realized she had been scammed and notified the police.

– The officers quickly identified the vehicle in which the perpetrators of the fraud were driving towards Krakow after a successful “jump”. Subsequently, they informed the Krakow and Myślenice policemen of their findings, who stopped the indicated Audi in the town of Jawornik, informed the junior inspector Sebastian Gleń, press officer of the Lesser Poland police in the message.

Two men aged 35 and 38 were in the car. Residents of the vicinity of Krakow had bags with them, and in them cash – over PLN 70,000. Both were detained. Soon after, a 57-year-old cooperating with them fell into the hands of the officers.

The men were charged with fraud, which carries a prison sentence of six months to eight years. The court – at the request of the prosecutor’s office – decided to temporarily arrest the gang.

– In the course of further activities, the investigators will clarify whether the detainees are related to other frauds of seniors in the Nowy Targ district – added Gleń.
