The restrictions on changing the limits are overdue. Eastern voivodeships will not benefit much from this, but any form of limitation of mobility and interaction at the moment will bring us some relief in two weeks, especially when it comes to admissions to hospitals and deaths – said Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an expert of the Supreme Council on TVN24. Medical Clinic for COVID-19. Referring to the omicron variant, he said it could become “the new dominant type if we do not contain it at national borders”.
Health Minister Adam Niedzielski announced “alert package of restrictions” due to the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus called omicron. The new restrictions include a ban on flights to seven African countries, an extended quarantine for people coming to Poland from outside the Schengen area, and a change in the limits of people in many public places.
Grzesiowski: restrictions are late, but any form of restriction of interaction will bring some relief
The presented restrictions were commented on by Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an expert of the Supreme Medical Council on COVID-19, on TVN24.
– The first group consists of delayed changes that were expected much earlier, precisely in terms of these restrictions on the number of people indoors, during events and so on. This is something that does not in any way affect the omicron virus, which officially does not exist in Poland yet, but even if it is, these are isolated cases – he said.
Grzesiowski assessed that these changes were delayed, “because part of Poland has already experienced the highest incidence of morbidity”.
– Eastern voivodeships will not benefit much from this, but any form of restriction of mobility and interaction at the moment will bring us some relief in two weeks, especially when it comes to hospital admissions and deaths – he added.
The second group – as Grzesiowski continued – “these are the limitations related to bringing the new variant to Poland”. He noted that “here the key is to seal the border, here we should use the quarantine tool very precisely”. In his opinion, quarantine should also apply to vaccinated people, but should be shortened after two negative tests.
Grzesiowski: the omicron may become the new dominant type of virus
Referring to the characteristics of the omicron variant, an expert of the Supreme Medical Council said that “it looks like the virus is more infectious”. – For a simple reason – at this time, when the delta variant is dominant, it breaks through. So it must have some feature that promotes it, which is better than the delta variant. It may be contagious, which may be several or dozen percent higher. This would mean that there is a chance that the omicron virus will become the new dominant type, if we do not stop it at the borders of individual countries – said the TVN24 guest.
