The group of businessman Andrei Nechaev New People will be the fifth party represented in the State Duma. His presence in the lower house of parliament will be beneficial for the authorities, estimates Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
The daily in the Tuesday edition reminds that there were already top-down party projects in Russia, which were intended to be moderately liberal. Nevertheless, in these earlier projects the pro-market electorate was “intertwined with the human rights electorate.”
“This year, the authorities made a very clear line between the two types of voters and parties: if you talk about political prisoners and corrupt power, then you are foreign agents, and in perspective – criminals. If you are interested in business, taxes, you can compete on general terms” – “Niezawisimaja Gazieta” emphasized. As noted, the New People party, founded in 2020 by businessman Andrei Nechaev, “fits the latter model”.
According to the newspaper, the party had the same political consultant as United Russia, so their success and that of United Russia should rather be seen as part of the whole.
A pride of unequivocal orientation
The daily stressed that in previous years, when the same four parties still sat in the Duma, the parliament was not “balanced”. “It was a Duma with an unambiguous left-populist orientation and with such a set of ideas and people in which the activists of United Russia sometimes acted as unpopular reformers,” wrote “Nezavisimaya Gazeta”.
Now – as she concluded – the authorities receive “a more balanced parliament and this is important to them”. They will gain a “liberal-market partner” in parliament. This gives the opportunity to present some unpopular steps – such as raising the retirement age in Russia – “as a result of social consensus and not the will of a single political force.”
The New People party has passed the 5% election threshold. In the opinion of “Niezawisima Gazeta” “it can be said that this transition would not be possible without administrative support.”
Before that, since 2003, there were four parties in the State Duma, and United Russia, which is considered to be the “party of power”, has always dominated the chamber. Apart from that, the Duma was entered after each election: the heir of the communist party from the times of the USSR – the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), the populist-nationalist Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) led by Vladimir Żyrinowski, and the leftist Just Russia, created for the KPRF once .
