MEXICO CITY — Nicaragua has launched 12 Roman Catholic clergymen jailed on a wide range of costs and despatched them to Rome following an settlement reached with the Vatican, the Nicaraguan authorities stated in an announcement late Wednesday.

The federal government of President Daniel Ortega stated that the clergymen had been flown to Rome Wednesday afternoon following productive talks with the Vatican. Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, the church’s high determine in Nicaragua, didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.

The Nicaraguan authorities stated the deal confirmed “the everlasting will and dedication to search out options.”

Bishop Rolando Álvarez was not among the many names of the clergymen listed. Álvarez was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced in February to 26 years in jail shortly after Ortega’s authorities despatched 222 prisoners to the USA in a deal brokered by the U.S. authorities.

Álvarez had refused to get on that flight. Nicaragua’s authorities later stripped these prisoners of their citizenship.

Ortega’s authorities has aggressively pursued the Catholic church lately. Ortega has maintained that the church aided fashionable protests towards his administration in April 2018 that he thought of an tried coup.
