They had been trying to catch him since October and each time he managed to escape. Now a stork from Niemojewice near Żarnów (Łódź Voivodeship) has been captured. – The bird is in good condition, it is an adult, but it has a damaged wing and will never fly to Africa again – said the head of the Animal Rehabilitation Center in Koło, where the stork was taken.
About a stork that did not fly away to its wintering place and is fed by two residents of the Żarnów commune, we wrote at the beginning of December.
The stork appeared in Niemojowice at the end of September. By then it was no longer flying and was walking around the surrounding fields with its wing down. He was helped from the beginning by two residents who asked for help in catching him, including the commune office. – The lady from the office sent two plumbers to the site and they were supposed to catch the stork. People were running with flashlights, this stork was so scared that it moved into the nearby forest. We provide him with food all the time and fortunately he eats everything, Mrs. Teresa reported at the beginning of December.
The commune’s mayor assured that he would do everything to catch the stork and deliver it to a specialist center at the commune’s expense. But every attempt to catch the stork ended in failure.
The stork was caught
On Saturday afternoon, the mayor of the Żarnów commune announced that the bird had finally been caught. – The manhunt lasted for several days, led by councilor Leszek Czyżykowski. Together with his son and a friend, they drove the stork into the bushes, approached it and caught it – describes mayor Krzysztof Nawrocki.
The stork was taken to the Animal Rehabilitation Center in Koło near Piotrków Trybunalski. – The bird is in good condition, it is an adult, but it has a damaged wing and will never fly to Africa again – said the head of the center, Paweł Kowalski. – We will leave him with us and he will be a doyen for the young storks that we have in the center. Such adult storks are very important because when we raise such young ones, there must be an adult so that they have a role model. And if there is no such pattern, they will not know how to build nests later – he added.
