A lion killed its keeper at a university zoo in Nigeria. According to local media, the man was attacked while feeding predators. The animal had known its guardian all its life, the university authorities said.

The incident took place on Monday at the zoo belonging to the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife city. The animal keeper was feeding the lions when he was suddenly attacked by one of the predators. Although his colleagues rushed to help him, it was too late.

It could have been human error

In a statement, the university authorities said that the aggressive male lion was immediately euthanized to ensure the safety of employees and visitors of the zoo. They emphasized that the guardian had known the animals and cared for them for nine years, i.e. from the moment they were born on campus.

“We have no idea what happened to the animal that made it attack,” said Abiodun Olarewaju, a university spokesman.

According to the president of the Students’ Union, Abbas Akinremi, the attack was caused by human error – the caretaker forgot to close the animal enclosure, prompting the predator to attack.
