Ecuadorian police found 10 bodies at a property in the city of Guabo in El Oro province in the south of the country. One of them was quartered. There were also bullets at the scene. Ecuador has been struggling with brutal drug gang warfare for years.

– There are nine bodies, and a kilometer away there is a completely dismembered body in a jute bag – announced Colonel Pablo Fajardo to local journalists. He said the nationality of these people was unknown.

Bullets were also found where the bodies were discovered. These include 9-millimeter bullets and 5.56-caliber rifle ammunition. According to Fajardo, in addition to the victims, other people who escaped may have previously stayed in this place.

Initial investigation suggests the victims may have had records for illegal drug dealing, robbery and attempted murder.

Gang fights

In recent years, Ecuador there are acts of violence, which the authorities attribute to drug gangs fighting for control of smuggling routes.

An increase in crime and brutality prompted President Daniel Noboa this year to declare a “state of internal armed conflict” and designate many gangs as terrorist groups.

“The situation is out of control.” Why was the “island of peace” suddenly engulfed in chaos?
