North Korean mechanized troops carried out maneuvers over the weekend. One of their elements was an artillery shooting competition. This is part of the efforts to increase the country’s defense capabilities, local media reported on Sunday.

The artillery firing was overseen by General Pak Jong Chon, a member of the Presidium of the Politburo and secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Korean Workers’ Party, the North Korean state news agency KCNA reported. According to Reuters, the general is also the coordinator of North Korea’s missile program.

“The Korean People’s Army (KPA) is enthusiastic about intensive training to usher in a new chapter in strengthening the state’s defense capabilities,” reported the KCNA.

When informing about the maneuvers, KCNA emphasized that North Korea is increasingly being treated according to double standards. As argued by the station, Pyongyang’s military actions are subject to international criticism, while similar exercises by South Korea and the United States are not criticized.

Pyongyang wants international acceptance

Analysts cited by Reuters say Pyongyang is seeking recognition of the right to its defense efforts with the aim of ultimately gaining international acceptance for its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals, which have been sanctioned by the UN Security Council.

Much of North Korea’s large conventional artillery force is deployed along its fortified border with South Korea, within its range of South Korea’s densely populated capital, Seoul.
