North Korea has conducted long-range maneuvering missile tests. As reported by the North Korean news agency KCNA, the development of missiles ensures “having more effective deterrents to more reliably guarantee state security and a strong limitation of military maneuvers of enemy forces.”
During tests on Saturday and Sunday after two years of research, the missiles flew 1,500 kilometers before hitting their targets, KCNA reported.
The agency stresses that in recent years, North Korea has made rapid progress in developing long-range cruise missiles, “weapons of great strategic importance” and with high deterrence potential.
Increased North Korean military capabilities
The development of missiles ensures “the possession of further effective deterrents to more reliably guarantee the security of our country and a strong limitation of military maneuvers of the enemy forces” – wrote the KCNA.
As the French agency AFP notes, despite many international sanctions, North Korea under the leadership of Kim Jong Un has significantly increased its military capabilities. Pyongyang conducted, inter alia, several nuclear tests and successfully tested ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.
At the January congress of the ruling party, Kim Jong Un announced further nuclear weapons and the construction of “the most powerful military force”. Pyongyang accuses Washington and Seoul of hostile intentions and maintains that nuclear and missile armaments protect it from invasion.
Negotiations at a standstill
Nuclear negotiations between the US and North Korea have come to a standstill since the failed summit attended by then-US President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in February 2019.
After taking office as US President, Joe Biden ordered a comprehensive review of US policy towards the North Korean regime to identify all possible options in the face of the growing threat posed by North Korea.
