North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has a son as the eldest child, the South Korean intelligence agency NIS said. In addition to him, Kim also has a daughter, with whom he appeared in public, and another child, but his gender is not known, the Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday.

North Korean media first showed Kim Jong Un with his daughter in November 2022, when she accompanied him during a missile test. Her name was not given and she was referred to only as the “beloved daughter” of the leader. South Korean intelligence at the time estimated that this was probably his second child, about 10-year-old Kim Dzu Ae.

In February 2023 Kim showed up again with his daughter at a banquet celebrating the 75th anniversary of the North Korean armed forces. State media again did not introduce her by name, this time describing her as the “respected daughter” of the leader. Later, the South Korean authorities issued the first postage stamps with the image of Kim and the girl.

There have been speculations in the media whether Kim Jong Ae is being prepared for the role of a potential successor to Kim Jong Un. South Korean Unification Minister Kwong Jung Se, who handles North Korean affairs, said in late February that it was still “a bit early” to judge.

– Even North Korea will now start his succession plan, the question remains whether [córka Kima – przyp. red.] will be able to lead a regime that is built around the military,” Kwong said. He assessed that North Korean society is “much more patriarchal” than South Korean society.

The minister declined to confirm at the time whether Kim’s eldest child was a son, as speculated.

South Korean intelligence also estimated that North Korea could hold a large-scale military exercise and test a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in March or April, the South Korean news agency reported.

Earlier on Tuesday, the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Yo Jong warned USA against attempts to shoot down North Korean missiles over international waters of the Pacific Ocean. She stated that this would mean “a clear declaration of war against the DPRK.”

“We are watching the uneasy military movements of the U.S. forces and South Korean puppet forces, and are always ready to take appropriate, swift and overwhelming action according to our judgment,” Kim said in a statement published by state news agency KCNA.
