In North Korea, 800,000 citizens in just one day expressed their desire to join the armed forces to fight the United States, according to the regime’s government media. These are undoubtedly propaganda statements, but many Western experts warn not to ignore the military threat from Pyongyang.

On Friday alone, 800,000 workers and students from across the country expressed a desire to join or rejoin the North Korean armed forces to oppose the US, the official press organ of the country’s ruling Communist Workers’ Party of Korea (WPP), the Rodong Sinmun daily, reported.

Commentators on the propaganda claims of the authorities

Although the claims of “Rodong Sinmun” are perceived as propaganda, Western experts have repeatedly warned of the military threat from North Korea, especially in the context of Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear armaments.

The North Korean authorities strongly protest against the joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises Freedom Shield, which began on Monday.

On Sunday Pyongyang conducted a ballistic missile test short-range ship that fell into the Sea of Japan. It was the regime’s fourth show of force this week. Earlier on Thursday, the Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile was launched into the sea.

Last year North Korea it also conducted a record number of missile tests, threatened the US and South Korea with nuclear weapons and amended its nuclear doctrine to allow the use of such weapons in a pre-emptive attack.

North Korea’s military capabilities

The American think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) estimated in 2022 that North Korea has the material to build more than 100 nuclear warheads and has already tested missiles with which it could launch a nuclear attack on United States.

According to the data cited in the CFR report, North Korea has the fourth largest army in the world with 1.2 million soldiers. Possibly also possesses chemical and biological weapons. Although it is considered one of the poorest countries in the world and faces chronic food shortages, it spends almost 25 percent of its of its GDP on armaments.
