Espen Barth Eide, representing the Labor Party, did not rule out that his country would join the EU in a similar way to Sweden. NATO, i.e. he will suddenly change his mind under the influence of the international situation. – For now, however, there is no majority in Norway on this matter neither on the left side of our political scene nor on the right, he emphasized.

Norwegian media speculated that the government in Oslo might apply for EU membership if it won Donald Trump in the fall US presidential elections. Some people fear that NATO will be weakenedwhich would prompt Norway to seek to strengthen the country's position through Brussels.

In 1994, 52 percent Norwegians voted in a referendum against the country's entry into the EU.

Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs: Poland is becoming more influential than Germany

Eide devoted a large part of his speech at the International Press Center in Stockholm return Donald Tusk to power in Poland after the elections in autumn 2023 and Poland's growing influence in the EU. – The good result in the last European elections confirms the position of the Polish government – he said.

The head of Norwegian diplomacy recalled that in 2011-12, when he was responsible for foreign policy in the government of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, he cooperated with Prime Minister Tusk and his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski. – I already claimed that Poland would be an important force in Europe – he emphasized. – We have been missing this Polish presence a bit in recent years, and now I see that Poland is becoming a more influential player in the EU than Germany and France – he added.

“We are working to make Poland even closer to us”

Espen Barth Eide expressed his belief that from a Norwegian perspective Poland is not only a Baltic country, but also, in many respects, becoming a Nordic country. – We are working to make Poland even closer to Norwegians – he declared.

Among the prospective areas of bilateral cooperation, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Norway exchanged supplies of Norwegian gas to Poland via the gas pipeline Baltic Pipe, as well as defense issues, e.g. Poland's purchase of Norwegian NSM multi-role anti-ship missiles, which protect the Polish coast. Poland is also the largest beneficiary of the so-called Norwegian funds.

The head of Norwegian diplomacy is taking part in a two-day meeting of foreign ministers of the Nordic countries in Stockholm from Wednesday. The topic of talks between representatives of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland is, among others, strengthening security cooperation after Sweden and Finland join NATO.
