Two soldiers were injured in an unfortunate accident that occurred during the transfer of weapons during a change of post near the town of Nowa Łuka (Podlaskie Voivodeship), the Operational Command of the Armed Forces Branches reported. The statement added that “the lives of both soldiers are not in danger.”
Late on Tuesday evening, a statement was issued by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces “concerning the incident during Operation Safe Podlasie”.
“Today at approximately 6:45 p.m. near the town of Nowa Łuka (Podlaskie Province), an unfortunate accident occurred. During the transfer of weapons during a change of guard post, uncontrolled shots were fired from service weapons, as a result of which a soldier from the 1st Tank Battalion in Żurawica / 18th Mechanized Division was shot in the leg,” it was reported.
As reported, “the soldier was provided with first aid at the scene.” “He was then immediately transported to the hospital in Białystok using an emergency medical helicopter. The soldier's condition is stable, there is no threat to his life,” it was stated.
“A second soldier from the same unit was also injured in the incident, suffering a wound to his finger. After providing first aid at the scene, the soldier was transported to the hospital in Hajnówka to provide specialist medical assistance,” it was reported.
It was emphasized that “the lives of both soldiers are not in danger”. “There were no third parties involved in the incident. The families of the injured were informed of the unfortunate accident and provided with psychological care” – it was noted. As added, “the Military Police are conducting explanatory activities at the scene of the incident”.
Operation Safe Podlasie, in which soldiers serve on the Polish-Belarusian border in this region, is aimed at securing this border in connection with migratory pressure and hybrid activities on the part of Belarus.
