Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe received a location decision from the Pomeranian Voivode for the project of the first Polish nuclear power plant – the company announced on Thursday. The decision concerns the location of “Lubiatowo-Kopalino”.
Thanks to the decision to determine the location, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe received the right to use the area for preparatory work, as well as the construction and subsequent operation of the nuclear power plant. The decision specifies in detail, among others: the territorial scope of the investment, both on land and at sea, and also specifies the investment implementation conditions, including technical, environmental, conservation and fire protection conditions. 100% owned by to the State Treasury PEJ is the investor and will be the operator of the power plant.
Another decision
The decision to determine the location of the investment concerns the project involving the construction and operation of the first nuclear power plant in Poland, with three AP1000 Westinghouse reactors with a total power of 3,750 MWe, in the Choczewo commune in the “Lubiatowo-Kopalino” location.
As PEJ emphasized, the location decision is not equivalent to a building permit. After obtaining it, the investor is obliged to obtain a permit to perform preparatory work, also issued by the voivode. Then, a permit to build the power plant must be issued by the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, and in the next stage, the Pomeranian Voivode decides to grant a construction permit, which will allow construction work to begin.
– The “Lubiatowo-Kopalino” location was indicated as the company’s preferred location in 2021 due to the balance between environmental aspects, socio-economic factors and nuclear safety. Obtaining the decision to determine the location for the first nuclear power plant in Poland is another milestone achieved by the company this year, which brings us, as an investor, closer to the start of construction of the facility – said Mateusz Berger, president of PEJ, quoted in the company’s press release.
“We are not slowing down”
In 2023, PEJ obtained a basic decision and a decision on environmental conditions for its investment in Pomerania.
– The decision to determine the location obtained by Polish Nuclear Power Plants allows the company to carry out preparatory activities in the “Lubiatowo-Kopalin” location in the field, indicating, among others, specific plots for the implementation of the investment. This is another key decision in the power plant investment process. The decision issued, combined with the recently signed contract for the design of the power plant with our American partners, proves that we are consistently achieving subsequent milestones, and the nuclear power plant in Pomerania is the most advanced nuclear investment in the country. We are not slowing down and continue to work so that energy from the first Polish nuclear power plant will flow on schedule – said Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, government plenipotentiary for strategic energy infrastructure, quoted in the PEJ press release.
According to the schedule of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program, the first unit of the first nuclear power plant would be launched in 2033.
