In 2010, there were 58.9 thousand beauty and hairdressing salons in Poland. At the end of 2024, there were already over 132,000 of them – reports in the Monday edition of “Rzeczpospolita”. – The number of showrooms is systematically growing, which is a sign of the growing demand for this type of services – says Tomasz Starzyk, spokesman for the Dun & Bradstreet intelligence agency, which prepared a report on this subject, in an interview with the daily.

As noted by “Rzeczpospolita”, only in 2024 the services industry in the beauty sector, beauty salons and hairdressing salons, grew by almost 10,000. During this time, 14.7 thousand were created. new companies, and just over 5,000 were deleted from the registers. companies.

This “clearly proves that society is getting richer”

– Over the last 12 months, the Polish market has grown by 8 percent. There are over 132.4 thousand beauty salons: hairdressing and beauty salons. To this number we should add nearly 10,000 SPAs and all kinds of biological regeneration points – says Tomasz Starzyk, spokesman for Dun & Bradstreet, quoted by “Rz”. – The number of salons has been systematically growing since 2012, which is also a sign of increasing investment in themselves and the appearance of Polish women and the growing demand for this type of services – he adds.

As explained by prof. Jacek Tomkiewicz, dean of the College of Finance and Economics at the Leon KoźmiÅ„ski University, said the dynamic development of this industry “clearly proves that society is becoming richer.”

– We have more and more money and less and less time for cleaning at home, cooking or shaving, so we are increasing the demand for services provided by entrepreneurs who respond to the growing demand – he points out in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita”.

Problems with the staff

As Dun & Bradstreet notes, the industry's problem is the lack of suitably qualified employees. Among the multitude of people trained after “fast courses on the commercial market”, there is a lack of those who graduated from vocational schools.

– The increase in spending on services among consumers is undoubtedly optimistic as a clear signal of economic recovery. This is influenced, among other things, by stabilization inflationwage dynamics and, in many areas, changes in market behavior, varying depending on the generation of consumers – says Mariusz Woźniakowski from the Faculty of Management at the University of Lodz for “Rzeczpospolita”.

– As a consequence, as consumer spending increases, and thus demand in the service sector, supply begins to increase, hence the dynamic increase in the number of entities specializing in the provision of various services – he adds.

Price war

The issue of debt remains a major challenge. The National Debt Register of the Economic Information Bureau reports that 3,698 debtors from this industry have debts of PLN 51.3 million. “Compared to January 2024, there was a 15% increase in the number of debtors and an increase in total debt by PLN 5.5 million,” the newspaper points out.

There is also price dumping on the market, i.e. lowering prices below costs. Cheaper services may appeal to customers, but in the long run they mean monopoly and higher prices of services when the competition disappears.
