The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation on Thursday into the sale of tickets to Oasis concerts by Ticketmaster, which is linked to the band's so-called dynamic pricing.
Hundreds of thousands of Oasis fans waited hours in virtual queues last weekend to get tickets for the band's 2025 concerts. “Many thought they would pay the advertised price of 148.50 pounds (about PLN 750), but ended up paying more than twice that, at 355.20 pounds (about PLN 1,800),” Reuters reported on Thursday.
Investigation into ticket sales
The British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced the same day that it was investigating whether ticket sales conducted by Ticketmaster may have breached consumer protection law. The CMA said it would investigate whether the ticketing service engaged in “unfair commercial practices” and whether Oasis fans were informed that Ticketmaster used so-called dynamic pricing. The Oasis team said in a statement quoted by the BBC that decisions regarding tickets and their prices were the responsibility of promoters and management.
The implementation of so-called dynamic pricing means that as tickets are sold and the number of tickets left in the pool decreases, prices gradually increase. The faster and more tickets are purchased, the more rapidly prices increase, taking advantage of customer interest.
The BBC portal reminded a few days earlier that this is not a new phenomenon and is permitted by law. The Ticketmaster platform introduced this system back in 2022, arguing at the time that it was intended to prevent fraud and ensure that more money went to the artists themselves – added the Sky News portal.
Oasis is back
Noel and Liam Gallagher confirmed the reunion of the Oasis band in the last week of August. One of the most popular British rock bands of the turn of the century, after a break of more than 15 years, will play 17 concerts in the UK next year: in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin. Official sale of tickets for these events began on Saturday.
