On November 11, some residents of our country could see a white streak in the sky, and others heard a loud bang. A bolide, a very bright meteor, appeared over Poland. It is being checked whether fragments of space rock could have fallen to Earth.

The presence of the bolide over our country was registered on Monday, November 11, at 12:51 p.m. Its flight was recorded by cameras near Wadowice and Żywiec (Lesser Poland Voivodeship), belonging to the Skytinel project, which monitors the sky over Poland. The meteor was also visible from the observation tower on Mount Kamionna in the Beskid Wyspowy Mountains.

As it was written, according to the preliminary analysis, the bolide became visible at an altitude of 70.8 kilometers and its speed was 18.8 kilometers per second. This phase of the flight began over the town of Święta Anna, 28 kilometers away Częstochowa.

“The object was heading towards the Earth at an angle of 23.1° and after a few seconds of flight it underwent three fragmentations. The last, and by far the strongest, fragmentation occurred at an altitude of 34.9 km between Bełchatów and Piotrków Trybunalski. A moment later it ceased to be visible on the recordings” – we read .

As the authors of the analysis wrote, the course of the last phase of the flight caused a huge boom in the Łódź Voivodeship, “described by witnesses as thunder, but also a 'drum-like rumble' lasting several dozen seconds.”

Did pieces of rock fall to the ground?

It was determined that the object came from the belt asteroids between Mars and Jupiter and it was a fragment of a small asteroid. Specialists are currently assessing the probability of small fragments of it reaching Earth.
