In the atmosphere of a great scandal, one of the biggest in Polish football in recent years, it ended game 3rd qualifying round of the Europa Conference League: Śląsk Wrocław – St. Gallen. The team from Wrocław won 3:2, but was eliminated from the competition anyway. Croatian referee Duje Strukan contributed greatly to this, making several highly controversial decisions to the detriment of the hosts.
Śląsk Wrocław filed a protest. They want the match to be replayed
– All three referees had a negative attitude towards us from the beginning. We should have filed a protest to make this match known. We are held accountable for the result, and the referees should be held accountable in the same way – he said after match Jacek Magiera, coach of Śląsk.
The president of the Wrocław club agreed with him and announced that he would file a protest.
– At the moment we are analysing all legal possibilities. Nevertheless, I can already say with full certainty that we will file a protest to UEFA regarding the work of the referees, who did not control the events on the pitch and whose decisions were controversial – wrote Patryk Załęczny on the X portal.
Śląsk Wrocław's authorities followed up on Friday and actually decided to send a complaint to UEFA. The “Meczyki.pl” portal was the first to report it.
– The letter contains video attachments referring to specific situations, such as yellow cards for Petkov and Ortiz, which significantly weakened the team. In addition, the club from Wrocław indicates that the low level of conducting the match led to an escalation of the tense atmosphere between the two teams from the very beginning. Instead of putting out fires, it only started them. The conclusion of the letter? Śląsk expects the match to be repeated, although of course everyone in the club offices is aware that that playing the match again is extremely unlikely – we read on the portal's website.
President Załęczny also confirmed that the club had filed a complaint with UEFA.
– Our appeal has been sent to UEFA. We have listed all the controversial decisions of the referee, which in our opinion had a negative impact on the course of the match and escalated the bad atmosphere in the entire stadium. We are fighting for the good name of Śląsk and Polish teams in Europe. We cannot be treated like this. We want to resolve this match in a sporting manner – this is what we demand from UEFA – wrote the president of Śląsk on the X portal.
Śląsk now has to focus on competing in league. After three rounds, they have only two points and are only fifteenth in the table.
