The search for a driver who participated in a collision of two passenger cars in Olsztyn lasted over a day. Siblings – a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old – died in the accident. One of the drivers left the scene. Late Friday evening, he reported himself, not to the police, but to the hospital. The officers were notified by the facility staff.
The collision took place on Thursday at around 19 at the intersection of Bałtycka and Rybaki Streets. Two young people driving one of the cars – the prosecutor’s office confirmed unofficial media reports that they were siblings – died on the spot. After the accident, the driver of the other car escaped on foot. The search began immediately. There is Lake Długie near the site of the accident, and on one of its shores there is a forest that can be used to travel to other districts of Olsztyn. As the services suspected, this path was chosen by the man.
He found himself in the hospital
The accident participant was in hiding for over 24 hours. On Friday, around 22 reported to the hospital in Olsztyn. Staff who were informed about the search for the man immediately notified the police. The man was detained right after he left the facility. His health is so good that activities can be carried out with him.
According to the staff sergeant Andrzej Jurkun from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Olsztyn, the detained driver is 39 years old. The district prosecutor from the Olsztyn-Północ Prosecutor’s Office, Arkadiusz Szulc, specified in an interview with PAP that the investigators had 48 hours to decide what measures would be applied to the detained. – We will interrogate him, we have secured video surveillance – said the prosecutor.
The police had previously taken samples of genetic material from the 39-year-old’s car. The idea was that, after stopping, it was possible to confirm that he was definitely behind the wheel.
The course of the accident in Olsztyn
Jurkun told us that the accident happened when a 23-year-old woman driving an Audi A6 was turning back. Then an Audi a8 struck the side of her car with force, the driver of which later escaped. The driver and her 25-year-old brother died on the spot. There is a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour here.
