Omenaa Mensah took to social media to announce the death of her father Opoku Ware-Mensah. “I lost one of the most important people in my life,” she wrote.
“Today my world was shaken to its foundations,” Omenaa Mensah said on Instagram on January 3 in the evening. The journalist and philanthropist announced the death of her father, cardio- and thoracic surgeon Opoku Ware-Mensah, via social media. “He was not only a father to me, but also an inspiration and a force that motivated me to act,” she added.
Omenaa Mensah wrote that her father “took an extraordinary path: from Ghana to Poland, where he came to study medicine as a young, ambitious man looking for a better tomorrow.” “It was here that he fell in love with my Polish mother and began their life together, which became the foundation of my story,” she wrote.
“Life is not only what we lose”
“Today, however, I don't just want to mourn this loss. Dad taught me that life is not only what we lose, but above all what we can give to others,” she emphasized. She added that her father carried the idea throughout his life that one should “appreciate what is truly important.”
“We often get lost in complaining about everyday little things, when the world is full of injustice, suffering and lack of compassion,” wrote Omenaa Mensah. In the entry, she noted that her father showed her “how to look at these problems with open eyes and react wisely” and taught her “how to really support changes, especially in Africa, where he came from.”
“He was proud of the projects that my husband and I implemented together, and he always spoke warmly about Poland – a country that gave him a chance to develop and become one of the best surgeons,” she wrote.
Her father used to say that “education is the key to change – the greatest power we can pass on to others.”
Mensah emphasized that she wanted to “nurture and develop the values and heritage passed on to her.” “Today I bow my head in tribute to his life, work and ideas, which also became mine,” she added.
“Let the memory of my father live on – in our hearts and in the actions we take every day,” she wrote at the end.
