The first infection with a new coronavirus variant – omicron – in the United States was confirmed in California, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday. It added that tests for the presence of coronavirus, carried out on relatives of the infected person, gave a negative result.
The patient, who was confirmed to be infected, returned from South Africa on November 22. He is fully vaccinated and has moderate COVID-19 symptoms and his health is improving, the CDC said in a release. They added that the infected person has been in self-isolation since the test positive result.
Infection with omicron in the USA. “It was just a matter of time”
Infections with the omicron variant, first detected at the end of November in South Africa, have already been diagnosed in several countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) on November 26 classified the omicron as “worrying variants”. The previous coronavirus variant in this category was the delta variant that is currently dominant in the world.
US medical services have warned for several days that the new variant has probably already made its way to the US. – We knew that the detection of the first case of omicron infection in the US was only a matter of time – commented Dr.Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to the US President
