The UK ministry of health and social services has announced it will convene an urgent meeting of G7 health ministers on Monday to discuss the situation triggered by the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus.
The United Kingdom currently holds the presidency of the G7 group (France, Japan, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Canada).
The British government announced on Saturday that due to the omicron variant, people entering the country will be required to perform a PCR test and isolate until a result is obtained. In addition, there will be an obligation to wear masks in shops and public transport vehicles in England. The new rules will come into force on Tuesday.
The British Health Safety Agency on Sunday confirmed the third infection in the country with the omicron variant, adding that the infected had already left the UK. Where this person went was not specified.
Omikron – a new variant of the coronavirus
A new variant of the coronavirus, detected in South African countries, is spreading in Europe and the world. Omicron has been identified in over a dozen countries around the world, including several European countries.
In the US, White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci said a new variant of the coronavirus omicron is likely already present in the United States. He added that “in view of the high spreadability of the variant, sooner or later it will spread all over the world.”
Many countries have suspended flights or decided to introduce strict restrictions on travel from South African countries – so did the USA, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, Czech Republic, Thailand, South Korea, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Brazil, Egypt and Morocco.
